Kobani University Celebrates the 127th Anniversary of Kurdish Journalism Day

Kobani University, in cooperation with the Higher Institute of Media, organized a special event on Monday to mark the 127th anniversary of Kurdish Journalism Day, which is observed on April 22 each year. This date commemorates the publication of the first Kurdish newspaper, Kurdistan, in 1898 in Cairo, Egypt, by Kurdish journalist Miqdad Madhat Badrkhan.
The event began with two lectures. The first, titled The History of Kurdish Journalism, was delivered by Mr. Ali Nabou, a lecturer at the Higher Institute of Media. He highlighted the major historical milestones of Kurdish journalism from the late 19th century to the present day.
The second lecture, titled The Reality of Kurdish Media and the Role of Kurdish Journalists, was presented by renowned Kurdish journalist Rashad Sorkol. He discussed the professional challenges and political and social conditions facing Kurdish journalists, emphasizing the importance of maintaining professionalism and adhering to objectivity in media work.
The event also featured creative presentations by students of the institute, including a short film they produced that reflected their vision of journalism and its role in social change. Additionally, a photography exhibition showcased works by the students, portraying scenes from daily life in Kobani and the Kurdish community.
As a gesture of appreciation, Kobani University presented an honorary shield to Free Media, which was received by journalist Dajla Ahmed.
The event concluded with a musical performance by “Kivara” band, accompanied by traditional Kurdish dance (Dabke), in a festive atmosphere celebrating young media and artistic talents.
Kurdish Journalism Day is considered a national occasion celebrated by the Kurdish people across all parts of Kurdistan, in recognition of the role of Kurdish journalists in strengthening the media landscape and preserving Kurdish
cultural identity.
